Why does my succulent look different from the photo?

We strive to send succulents that are similar to our product photos. We are continually adding new photos to our product pages to illustrate the range of colors seen in our 500+ varieties throughout the seasons. That said, these are living plants and not manufactured goods, so every one will be a little different than the photo. And sometimes colors can change weekly, making it extremely challenging for us to keep the product photo current. Please note: For mixes and assortments (e.g. sets and trays), photos are always sample only; the varieties we choose may vary slightly throughout the seasons. We do update photos when a mix's appearance changes significantly.

Succulents can change colors and shapes depending on the season, sunlight, temperature, or frequency of watering. For many succulents, moderate environmental stress such as drought, cold air, or bright sunlight results in beautiful pigmentation. Our succulents are usually moderately stressed to achieve a more attractive appearance. However, many succulents tend to appear greener in late fall and winter because of shorter days and natural dormancy. When grown outdoors, hardy succulents such as Sempervivum and Sedum often show color year-round, though they may not be as bright as peak seasons (usually spring). Many hardy Sedum go full or semi dormant which means fewer leaves and more visible stems.

Stress from shipping in a dark box can also slightly change their appearance, resulting in a minor shift to greener or washed out tones. Fortunately, these changes are quickly reversed when the plant is transitioned back into brighter sunlight.

My plants were delivered damaged, what do I do?

Due to the complexities of packing and shipping live plants, sometimes things don’t go quite as expected. You can try to diagnose the problem and see if there is a quick fix. For the rare instances of damage or other issues, we offer a 14 Day Quality Guarantee to all our customers. If you qualify for the guarantee, please send photos of all the affected plants to our customer service team within 14 days of delivery.

My plants were delivered dry, what do I do?

Water them! We usually ship our succulents on the dry side to avoid rot during transit. Dry succulents are healthy and ready to be watered or transplanted according to the "First Steps" insert included in every package. Remember, succulents prefer a good drenching - they don't like to be sprayed or misted.

My plants were delivered wet, what do I do?

We usually send plants on the dry side but it is not always possible, especially in winter. Fortunately, most plants are quick to dry once out of the box.

  • Remove the plants from the package and pull off any mushy, translucent leaves.

  • Keep the plants in a sunny, well-ventilated location so that the soil can dry.

  • Once the soil is completely dry, the plants are ready to be transplanted and/or watered.

  • If you notice upper leaves turning mushy and rotten, take photos of all affected plants and send them within 14 days of delivery to our customer service team.

My plants have bugs, what do I do?

There are a couple of common pests that can attack succulents, particularly if they are indoors or kept too wet. The two usual culprits are mealybugs and aphids. Fortunately, mealybugs and aphids are treated in the same way and there are good, general pest prevention strategies that work for all types of bugs.

Prevention

  • Keep plants in locations with enough sunlight and airflow for soil to fully dry

  • Use pots with drainage holes

  • Water deeply and only when the soil is completely dry

  • Water in the early morning so that plants aren't sitting in water overnight

  • Repot every 1-2 years with gritty, well-draining soil

Solutions

  • Spray affected plants and soil with 50% diluted isopropyl alcohol every day until pests are gone

  • Use fans and windows to improve ventilation

  • Move containers into sunnier locations

  • Reduce watering frequency

  • Repot with fresh, well-draining soil

  • Top soil with diatomaceous earth

What if I have other questions, concerns, or requests?

Contact us! Our very knowledgeable customer service team are happy to help however we can! And if you have questions about a specific plant, please email us photos of it.

When will a plant be back in stock?

Many succulent varieties are only available seasonally because of their propagation cycles. During the growing season, we can usually restock sets and trays weekly. Most individual plants will go in and out of stock through the seasons, but they are also restocked weekly when available. Spring and summer are the best seasons for availability in general.
